چکیده

谷 田貝文夫,高 橋 旦,北 島淑男,松 山 晃:理 化学研究所,埼 玉 県和光市広沢2-1 〒351 Bacillus subtilis spores were bombarded with ƒ¿-particles and heavy ions of carbon , nitrogen, and oxygen accelerated in the IPCR cyclotron. The maximum RBE was found at an unrestricted LET of about 120 keV•EƒÊm-1 The effective inactivation cross section, Seff, for ƒ¿-particles increased with LET, reaching a stationary level of Sƒ¿st, 0.145 ƒÊ2. The analysis of the LET dependence revealed that seve ral primary activations are required for producing one lethal-hit, within a very short length of the particle track. The value of Sƒ¿st was lower than Seff for heavy ions (0.22-0.26 ƒÊm2). This discrepan cy may be due to a difference of the repair capacities of "strand-target" between ƒ¿-particles and heavy-ion bombardments, or to existence of a target (s) which is sensitive for bombarding particles of extremely high LET, or to a long-range effects caused by such high-LET particles.

Effect of electrostatic charge on the contamination of plastic food containers by airborne bacterial spores.

Electrostatic charge of approximately -10 kv was produced by friction on polystyrene food container samples. This charge quickly decayed to a lower, more stable, level. Exposure of samples to positively charged red and negatively charged green fluorescent particles resulted in a particle-distribution pattern on the plastic surface. The dynamic attraction of fluorescent particles was illustrated...

Radiation Inactivation of Bacterial Spores on Mars

Introduction: The conditions on Mars are thought to have been more conducive for life during its early history, about 3 billion years ago. If life ever evolved on Mars, would it be possible to see the remnants of a long-extinct biosphere today? Or even more interesting, would it be possible to find Martian bacterial spores that survived for billions of years on Mars? Bacterial spores exhibit a ...

High hydrostatic pressure-induced inactivation of bacterial spores.

High hydrostatic pressure (HHP) is the most-widely adopted novel non-thermal technology for the commercial pasteurization of foods. However, HHP-induced inactivation of bacterial spores remains a challenge due to spore resistance to the treatment limits of currently available industrial HHP units (i.e. ~650 MPa and 50 °C). Several reports have demonstrated that high pressure can modulate the ge...

Use of Raman Spectroscopy and Phase-Contrast Microscopy To Characterize Cold Atmospheric Plasma Inactivation of Individual Bacterial Spores.

UNLABELLED Raman spectroscopy and phase-contrast microscopy were used to examine calcium dipicolinate (CaDPA) levels and rates of nutrient and nonnutrient germination of multiple individual Bacillus subtilis spores treated with cold atmospheric plasma (CAP). Major results for this work include the following: (i) >5 logs of spores deposited on glass surfaces were inactivated by CAP treatment for...

In package inactivation of Bacillus atrophaeus spores using high voltage atmospheric cold plasma

Introduction: Hospital acquired infections are of a great concern, considering a large number of infections reported every year. Sterilization is an important step in healthcare industry that is attained by utilizing conventional sterilization approaches. It includes heat treatment, use of chemicals like ethylene oxide, hydrogen peroxide, and gamma radiation. These methods have drawbacks such a...
